LZ 127 / MONTE ROSA

Hello. Here are some very interesting original pictures which were taken on board the German Ocean Liner "MONTE ROSA" who's Port of Registry at the time of these pictures were taken was Hamburg (1933-40). They show a mid Atlantic crossing of the Monte Rosa destination Brazil in November - December 1936, and show a rendezvous with the LZ 127 "GRAF ZEPPELIN" and what looks like a lowering of supplies or mail ?, note the "SWASTIKA" emblem attached to the bag carrying the supplies which is either being lowered from or taken on board the Graf Zeppelin. Many passengers on the Monte Rosa on these cruises were aboard as privileged Nazi Party Members intended to reward and encourage them as a reward for there services to the Nazi Party (Hence the Swastika emblem attached to the bag). In May 1945 the Monte Rosa was captured by advancing British forces at Keil and was taken as a prize of war and later renamed the "EMPIRE WINDRUSH"

On October 20, 1936, the German steamer Monte Rosa started her Africa and Brazil round trip. The vessel returned back to Hamburg on December 16, 1936.

In November 1936, Monte Rosa met with airship LZ-127 Graf Zeppelin in the southern Atlantic. Captain Castan of the Monte Rosa vessel wired to the Graf Zeppelin that they could pick up a bottle of Champagne when flying over the Monte Rosa. Zeppelin Captain von Schiller replied that they would do so and gave instructions to prepare the meeting. The rest of the story is told with Talltree's images.

I am not aware that any mail was exchanged, but both airships (LZ-127 and LZ-129) carried on their late 1936 South America Flights zeppelin mail to South America which was addressed to passengers onboard Monte Rosa.

Hello. Continuing this thread i would like to show this "Monte Rosa" "Spiesenfolge" (order of courses) menu from my collection dated "Sunday 21. June 1936", this Spiesenfolge was from earlier in the same year (1936) as when the LZ 127 picked up the bottle of champagne from the Monte Rosa, Max Castan was also the Captain then.
