"1931 Polarfahrt & Documents"

Beitragvon TALLTREES » 1. Jan 2011, 21:33

Hello again and a Happy New Year. I enclose a picture of a Cover flown on the 1931 "POLAR FLIGHT" (FRIEDRICHSHAFEN- MALYGIN) with the 4 RM Zeppelin overprinted "POLAR-FAHRT 1931" postage stamp, Von Meister mail addressed to the USA, postmarked FRIEDRICHSHAFEN 24.7.31 - 8, and MALYGUIN 27 V11 31. I enclose pictures of documents issued by the Sieger company announcing the "FIRST NORTH POLE FLIGHT" 1931 made by the LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin in which the Zeppelin was supposed to meet up with the Wilkins-Elsworth Expedition who was aboard the submarine "NAUTILUS" and drop mail on to the submarine, but due to mechanical problems with the NAUTILUS on its way to meet up with the Graf Zeppelin this had to be abandon and instead the Zeppelin met up with the Russian ice-breaker ship the "MALYGIN".
Thanks again
TALLTREES.

Here is a sketch of what the meeting of the "GRAF ZEPPELIN" and the submarine "NAUTILUS" would have been like if the NAUTILUS hade made contact with the Zeppelin over the Arctic Ocean.

Hello again. Here is an very interesting picture showing mail being prepared and put in to Special Post Boxes on board the Graf Zeppelin ready for the exchange of mail with the Russian Ice Breaker Ship "MALYGIN". Does any member know who these Two crew members (?) are, also note the Thick Woollen Jumpers that they are both wearing and the Picture Postcard being put in to the Post Box.
The writing below the picture reads " [b]AN EXCHANGE OF MAIL BEETWEEN AIRSHIP AND ICE - BREAKER IN THE ARTIC , PREPARING A POST BOX ABOARD THE "GRAF ZEPPELIN" FOR THE "MALYGIN".

The person on the right is Lincoln Ellsworth.

Source: John Duggan, Airships in the Arctic, 2006, page 228, the same photo is illustrated, only with a different description.

Hello Zeppelin and friends,
this photo made by Walter Bosshard - a photographer of the expedition, first of all was published in "Popular mechanics" of November 1931 in the report of the expedition among other photos. I think the person on left is Chief steward Heinrich Kubis.

The magazine "Popular mechanics" of November 1931 with this report and comments of the additional crew member in Polar Flight 1931 Walter Bosshard and his photos:

Best regards,

Hello pasol. I show a picture of the back of the picture that i have shown of Lincoln Ellsworth and Heinrich Kubis (?), it also looks as though it was cut from a magazine.

According to the caption of the image provided by pasosl, the guy is Samoilovich and not Kubis. So on the photo provided by TALLTREES (the one with the mailbox) we have to the left Samoilovich and to the right Ellsworth.

Attached is another photo showing zeppelin 1931 Polar Flight scientists Smith, Samoilovich and Ellsworth (from left to right).
