Yokohama Mail during World Round flight 1929

Beitragvon pasol » 18. Feb 2015, 11:13

Dear friends,

one of interesting event from postal history of World Round (Circuit) flight 1929 is mails delivery by LZ-127 "Graf Zeppelin" to Yokohama/Japan at August 19th, 1929.
In most catalogues are only two types of mail:
1) Drop mail over Yokohama at August 19th, 1929, in Sieger on p.85 and Mi.#29 Ig.(all 47 items were annihilated); :cry:
2) Zeppelin mail, which was delivered thru Tokyo to Yokohama at August 20th or 21st, 1929.

But some catalogues, for example: Hans Sander on p.55-57, writes about another type of Yokohama's mail... 8-)

Best regards,
pasol.

It is pre-printed cards and covers from Firm Sieger addressed to Missionar Siryng with board cancellation from August 16th, 1929 and an especial arrival stamp of region Kikuna/Yokohama and without arrival stamp of Tokyo. :shock:

I think that a quantity of similar items is about 250 pieces. All such items are numbered. I have in my collection two pieces with No.#198 & #202. I found the item with the highest number No.#227.
Features of this type:
1)They haven't a guiding stamp of the first stage and have board post office cancellation from August 16th, 1929, like a real board mail;
2) They haven't an arrival stamp of Tokyo at August 19th, 1929 or Yokohama at August 20th, 1929;
3) Why was used this POI (place of interest)? Kikuna/Yokohama is so far from Kasumigaura Naval Air base, where LZ-127 "Graf Zeppelin" landed, and there were no an official events in this POI;
4) Was used an inofficial post office stamp.

But I don't know the real history of appearance of these items. Also Mr. Hans Sander don't report it. :roll: But he says it is the most seldom type of Japanese arrival stamps.
Maybe someone from our colleagues knows anything about it :?: Maybe Firm Sieger knows :?: Please tell us :!: ;)
I think they have been specially made for receiving to the addressee instead destroyed Yokohama's drop mail ... therefore I propose to call such items "Yokohama's pseudo-drop mail". :D

Dear friends,

by the way, Firm Sieger made these items especially for this flight in red colour. In earlier flights it used the similar items, but in another colour (green) and with a phrase: "After 5 days return to:". Please see such item from my collection of Interrupted American Flight 1929 with No.6. 8-)

I think, it proves that the "red" items were on board the LZ-127 "Graf Zeppelin" during World Round flight 1929 as a reserve(without accurate delivery address)and they were used in Yokohama at August 19th or 20th, 1929. The delivery address was typed in Japan :?:

pasol.

Hello pasol & members. Sadly i don't have any mail connected with the 1929 "RTWF" (Yokohama Mail) :( , but like pasol has shown i can too add these two pieces from my collection from the 1929 "INTERUPTED FLIGHT". Both pieces also are addressed to Mr Zimmermann, New Jersey, USA, but each piece (Postcard/Cover) has different coloured instructions (One Green & Red) & (One Red & Blue-Violet), both pieces (Postcard/Cover) are Sieger mail. It appears that this Cover got a different colour instruction mark (Blue-Violet / Red), and Postcards got (Green / Red), also the Sieger address on the Cover is a different colour (RED) instead of Green, both Cover and Postcard have serial numbers on (570 / 148). So Red items were already being used before the 1929 "RTWF" :?

Dear TALLTREES,

a lot of thanks for your aid! Especially for your red cover of Interrupted American flight 1929. :D
I know that the same were used also for World Round flight 1929 for Yokohama's pseudo-drop mail.

I know also that earlier Firm Sieger used another type of pre-printed postcard and cover, but the photo side is the same, please see below. 8-)

Hello pasol & members. Going slightly off subject (Yokohama Mail during World Round flight 1929) but continuing with Sieger mail here is a different variation of a Cover in Red from my collection from the 1929 " MITTELMEERFAHRT " (MEDITERRANEAN FLIGHT), again with serial Number " 65 ". ;).

Interesting observation my friend.....

However, taking the Sander publication as a reliable source in this case is a bit tricky. See page 40 and his internal number 82 - another cover addressed to missionary Syring and this time classified as onboard mail postmarked at Friedrichshafen with 150 points only compared to 500 points with the oval black Japanese cachet. Should this mean that the item on page 40 does not have the oval cachet?

I think Sander is correct in this issue (#82, postmarked at Friedrichshafen) despite all missing markings. And these covers were indeed dispatched by Sieger under cover at the PO Friedrichshafen and then were flown to Tokyo, offloaded and delivered to the addressee. Due to the high number of items sent by Sieger to the same addressee (this one on page 40, #82 has the low number 36!) they were sent in a bundle and thus did not receive any transit-/arrival markings.

Perhaps someone can find out something about the oval Japanese cachet. What does it read? Is it a private or a postal cachet?

Dear Zeppelin,

thanks for your interest for this thread! Now I can add only:
1) You are right about second item from p.40 (#82) with the same address from Sander's book: it has not the "oval Japanese cachet", so it got a lower value from Sander ;
2) I think that I can read the "oval Japanese cachet", it is the address of Mr.Syring (the same is on postcard): ;)

市横浜聚川奈神 - City Yokohama district (ku) Kanagawa
五0四谷宮町名菊 405 (504) Miyatani town(machi) Kikuna

I think it's a private stamp, not postal. 8-)

Best regards,
pasol.
